Introduction:

A refugee is an individual who resides outside their nation of origin and possesses a legitimate fear of experiencing persecution based on factors such as their race, religion, nationality, affiliation with a particular social group, or political beliefs.

As for asylum seekers who are located within Canada or at its borders, their applications for refugee status are assessed and determined within Canada. Canada holds legal responsibilities to refugees within its borders, with the most significant duty being the prohibition of their deportation to a situation where they may encounter persecution.

Annually, Canada resettles numerous refugees from different nations where they are temporarily residing. These refugees may be found in various situations, such as refugee camps, urban areas, or struggling to endure in a country where they lack legal status and fundamental rights. Some may even be detained or at risk of being forcibly sent back to a place where they could face persecution.

These people need protection, and Canada offers programs to address this requirement

Presenter: Ilia Morshedi – RCIC – IRB

Ilia Morshedi is the principal paralegal and RCIC-IRB of Morshedi Legal Services and MOR Canadian Immigration. He is licensed by the Law Society of Ontario and Immigration Consultants of Canada Regulatory Council (ICCRC). He graduated with honours from the Paralegal Program at Seneca College of Applied Arts and Technology. He holds The Certificate in Adjudication for Administrative Agencies, Boards and Tribunals (Osgoode Hall Law School of York University and The Society of Ontario Adjudicators and Regulators), The Osgoode Certificate in Provincial Offences Court Practice, and a certificate in Alternative Dispute Resolution (Seneca College). In addition to his responsibilities at Morshedi Legal Services and MOR Canadian Immigration, he is the paralegal program coordinator at Toronto School of Management and has taught immigration law at CDI College.
