Introduction:
Criminal Rehabilitation and Temporary Resident Permits (TRPs) are two key mechanisms under Canadian immigration law used to address criminal inadmissibility. Criminal Rehabilitation is a permanent remedy that allows an individual who has committed or been convicted of certain offences to overcome inadmissibility once they meet the eligibility requirements and demonstrate that they are no longer a risk to Canadian society. A Temporary Resident Permit, on the other hand, is a discretionary and temporary solution that allows a person who is otherwise inadmissible to enter or remain in Canada for a specific purpose when their need to be in Canada outweighs the associated risks. Together, these tools provide both short-term and long-term pathways for addressing criminal inadmissibility in appropriate cases.

Presenter: John Edwards – RCIC
John Edwards has been a licensed immigration consultant since 2006 and a member in good standing with the College of Immigration & Citizenship Consultants (CICC). He holds a BSc from the University of Guelph and spent approximately 10 years working in environmental sciences. He is also a member of the Canadian Association of Professional Immigration Consultants and previously served briefly as Policy and Lobbying Director with CAPIC. He gained valuable experience working with the late Cecil L. Rotenberg Q.C., a leading figure in Canadian immigration law. In addition to his consulting practice, Mr. Edwards is a licensed paralegal and a member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario. He has represented clients in temporary and permanent residence applications, as well as before the Immigration and Refugee Board (IRB), including the Immigration Division, RPD, and IAD. He currently focuses on assisting clients with humanitarian and compassionate applications.
